I recently had the pleasure of attending a Happy Sessions workshop with my very dear friend (and business partner's wife!), Anne Bérubé. It was an intense and wonderful few days with 50 other soul-seekers looking to explore what has been holding us back in our lives and how we might release it.
It was amazing to witness and experience Anne leading this group through the many tears, laughs, and discoveries over the weekend. Being in the presence of someone you love dearly who has fully stepped into their power and reached a level of mastery with their own gifts is intensely inspiring.
On the last day, one of the participants I had yet to hear much from, spoke up. She started steadily talking about the many benefits of the retreat, but as she circled in closer to what her heart wanted her to share, the happy tears flowed freely. She shared her most profound discovery of the session: “I just think about everything I’ve been able to do with ‘it’. And if I was able to do all that with it, just imagine what I can do without it!”
That hit me right between the eyes.
The “it” she was referring to, was her most insidious limiting belief.
We all have limiting beliefs. I constantly struggle with feeling like I will never be enough. What can be treacherous about these beliefs is that they can sometimes give us the false appearance of being helpful. If you believe you will never be enough, then you’re probably going to work insanely hard to prove yourself wrong. That’s what I did. From an early age, I was extremely driven to succeed, even at things others thought were “impossible” like being a feature filmmaker. (Especially at things others thought were impossible.) Yet, none of these accomplishments filled that void, because I had not addressed the limiting belief that was driving them.
It’s quite likely you have your own dominant limiting belief. And it’s also quite likely that it is stopping you from stepping into your own power and mastery.
The one we have seen most often in our Soul Tribe Masterclass participants (at least initially) is that they can’t have the life they want while also following their calling. This causes them to “play small” and not commit to announcing themselves and their offerings to the world.
Have you ever seen Beckhard’s “Change Formula”?
D X V X F > R
D = Dissatisfaction
You aren’t pleased with things as they are. You feel like you’re holding back. You know that you’re living below the level you’re capable of. There’s something more out there for you.
V = Vision
You have a clear vision of what you’re meant to do and how you can contribute to the world for the benefit of others.
F = First Steps
What do you do to get started?
R = Resistance to Change
Even for things we REALLY want, our limiting beliefs reinforce our remaining in the status quo.
In short, your Dissatisfaction, Vision, and First Steps all have to be stronger than your Resistance to Change.
Dissatisfaction is likely already there for you. That’s likely a big part of why you are reading articles like this one.
So, what about the Vision? What is your Vision and do you believe it is strong enough to overcome your Resistance to Change?
As for First Steps, what could you do TODAY to move the Vision you have for your life forward?
You don't need to over complicate it. Whenever you are feeling held back by a limiting belief, all you need to do is remind yourself of the above formula and identify which element or elements you need to work on to propel forward.
